Personal pronouns replace a noun so you don't repeat it. Subject pronouns — I, you, he, she, it, we, they — do the action and come before the verb.
English needs a subject in almost every sentence. Where some languages drop it, English keeps it: say 'It is raining', not 'Is raining'.
例文
She is a doctor.
'She' is the subject — it comes before the verb 'is'.
We live in London.
'We' = the speaker + others, doing the action.
It is cold today.
English needs 'it' here — the subject can't be dropped.
I
/aɪ/
I am a student.
you
/juː/
You are my friend.
he
/hiː/
He is my brother.
she
/ʃiː/
She is a doctor.
it
/ɪt/
It is a beautiful day.
we
/wiː/
We are happy together.
they
/ðeɪ/
They are my parents.
Choose the subject pronoun: ___ is my brother.
Fill in the subject pronoun for the speaker + others: ___ live in London.
Object pronouns — me, you, him, her, it, us, them — receive the action. They come after the verb or after a preposition (to, for, with).
Notice the pairs: I → me, he → him, she → her, we → us, they → them. 'You' and 'it' stay the same in both roles.
例文
Please call me tomorrow.
'me' receives the action of 'call'.
I gave him a present.
'him' is the object form of 'he'.
Can you help us?
'us' comes after the verb 'help'.
me
/miː/
Please call me tomorrow.
you
/juː/
I love you.
him
/hɪm/
I gave him a present.
her
/hɜːr/
Tell her the truth.
us
/ʌs/
Can you help us?
them
/ðem/
I saw them yesterday.
Choose the object pronoun: I saw ___ yesterday.
Use the object form of 'she': Tell ___ the truth.
In a full sentence the subject pronoun does the action and the object pronoun receives it. Compare: 'She loves him' — 'she' acts, 'him' receives.
A common mistake is mixing the two. Say 'He and I went home' (both subjects), and 'between you and me' (both after a preposition).
例文
She loves him.
Subject 'she' + object 'him'.
He and I are friends.
Two subjects — use 'I', not 'me'.
This is a secret between you and me.
After 'between' use object forms.
It is
/ɪt ɪz/
It is raining now.
They are
/ðeɪ ɑːr/
They are my classmates.
We have
/wiː hæv/
We have a meeting today.
She likes
/ʃiː laɪks/
She likes chocolate.
Choose the correct sentence.
Complete with the object form: This is a secret between you and ___.
