Verb „to be"

Erweitere deinen Wortschatz mit praktischen Beispielen

The verb 'to be' means to exist or to describe a state. It has three present-tense forms: am (with I), is (with he / she / it), and are (with you / we / they).

Unlike many languages, English never drops 'to be' from a sentence. You cannot say 'I student' — it must be 'I am a student'.

Beispiele

  • I am a student.

I → am. Never drop the verb.

  • She is a doctor.

    he / she / it → is.

  • We are ready.

    you / we / they → are.

I am

/aɪ æm/

I am a student.

you are

/juː ɑːr/

You are my friend.

he is

/hiː ɪz/

He is happy.

she is

/ʃiː ɪz/

She is a doctor.

it is

/ɪt ɪz/

It is cold today.

we are

/wiː ɑːr/

We are ready.

they are

/ðeɪ ɑːr/

They are tired.

Choose the correct form: She ___ a doctor.

Fill in the correct form: We ___ ready.

In natural speech and informal writing, 'to be' is almost always contracted: I am → I'm, you are → you're, he is → he's. The apostrophe replaces the missing letter.

Contractions sound more natural and are far more common than the full forms. 'I'm hungry' is what you will hear; 'I am hungry' sounds deliberate or emphatic.

Beispiele

  • I'm hungry.

    I am → I'm.

  • He's at home.

    he is → he's.

  • They're late.

    they are → they're.

I'm

/aɪm/

I'm hungry.

you're

/jʊər/

You're right.

he's

/hiːz/

He's at home.

she's

/ʃiːz/

She's busy.

it's

/ɪts/

It's cold today.

we're

/wɪər/

We're ready.

they're

/ðeər/

They're late.

Contract the verb: He is at home. → ___ at home.

Which contraction is correct for 'they are'?

To make a negative sentence, add 'not' after the form of 'to be': I am not, she is not, we are not.

In everyday English, 'is not' contracts to 'isn't' and 'are not' to 'aren't'. Note that 'am not' has no standard contraction — we say 'I'm not', never 'I amn't'.

Beispiele

  • I am not sure.

am + not. Shortened to 'I'm not'.

  • She isn't here.

    is not → isn't.

  • We aren't ready.

    are not → aren't.

I'm not

/aɪm nɒt/

I'm not sure.

isn't

/ˈɪzənt/

She isn't here.

aren't

/ɑːrnt/

We aren't ready.

Choose the correct negative: She ___ here.

Make it negative: We are ready. → We ___ ready.

To turn a 'to be' statement into a question, move the verb to the front — before the subject: You are ready → Are you ready? He is a teacher → Is he a teacher?

Short answers repeat only the verb: Yes, I am. / No, she isn't. Never say 'Yes, she is a doctor' in a short answer.

Beispiele

  • Are you OK?

are moves in front of you.

  • Is he a teacher?

is moves in front of he.

  • Am I right?

am moves in front of I.

Am I?

/æm aɪ/

Am I right?

Are you?

/ɑːr juː/

Are you OK?

Is he?

/ɪz hiː/

Is he a teacher?

Is it?

/ɪz ɪt/

Is it cold?

Turn into a question: You are ready. →

Complete the question: ___ he a teacher?
